A very rare exagium solidi with two facing imperial portraits
Lot 880
Byzantine Weights, Late 4th-early 5th centuries. Exagium Solidi (Bronze, 18 mm, 4.28 g), a uniface circular coin weight for a solidus, uncertain eastern mint, perhaps Constantinopolis. Diademed and draped facing busts of Honorius (?), on the left, and Theodosius II (?), on the right; above, cross. Rev. Plain. Bendall -. Leu 3 (2018), 333 var. (square not circular). MAH -. Pera -. Very rare. Flan crack on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.

This is a highly unusual piece in that it was made of a thin appliqué soldered onto a bronze flan.
